Arlington and Darrington Host Strong Communities Event and Bike Rides

ARLINGTON & DARRINGTON, WA - On Sunday, March 19, 2017, Arlington and Darrington will host the Ride to Remember Oso – A celebration of strong communities.

In the aftermath of the Oso landslide, Arlington and Darrington created a shared plan for revitalization as America’s Best Communities finalist. As the third anniversary of the landslide approaches, one of the important revitalization plan milestones and activities honors and remembers family, friends and community members whose lives were lost and the people who came together committed to preserving the Stilly Valley’s future.

A one-way, 28-mile bike ride will start in downtown Arlington at 8:15 a.m. It will follow State Route 530 to Oso Loop Road and continue east on SR 530 to Darrington.

Snohomish County Parks is hosting the JoJo Trail Ride which is a family friendly, free trail ride that begins at 10 a.m. at the Fortson Mill Trailhead, just 6 miles west of Darrington. Riders will get to preview of a section of the Whitehorse Trail, an unpaved trail that connects Arlington and Darrington. The father of one young victim of the slide had a custom bike created to remember his son, Jovan ‘JoJo’ Mangual. In this conversation, the idea of this remembrance ride was born.

Both bike rides will end at a gathering and celebration of Strong Communities at the Darrington Community Center from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Community members, families, bike riders and others will come together for food, refreshments, family activities and a special presentation acknowledging all that Arlington and Darrington accomplished together as part of the America’s Best Communities Program.

Speakers will include:

Senator Maria Cantwell

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene

Governor Jay Inslee

Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin

Arlington Mayor Barb Tolbert
