Thursday’s edition of Prep Sports Weekly mainly focuses on the high school golf season; but we’ll start with a story that could have lasting ramifications state-wide and nationwide.
Hermiston High School in Hermiston, Oregon has applied to join the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. In essence they will leave the state of Oregon and compete in the state of Washington. The reason? Hermiston has become a large fish in very small, remote pond.
Larry Usher, Athletics Director at Hermiston HS, says that Oregon’s athletic governing body (OSAA) will re-align high school enrollments next year and Hermiston, with nearly 1800 students, will move into the state’s largest classification. With that alignment Hermiston would be placed into a league based in Portland, more than 180 miles away!
You do the math. A 360 mile round-trip to play a Tuesday night varsity basketball game!
The travel costs alone will be prohibitive, not to mention the classroom time spent traveling to and from athletic events. Those costs would also be borne by other schools in their league who have to travel to Hermiston to play an away game against the Bulldogs.
Why is Hermiston such a large school in a fairly remote area of Oregon? Being so close to major east-west and north-south highways, Hermiston is the home to major distribution hubs for UPS and Wal-Mart; as well as the Union Pacific Railroad and Conagra Foods.
We’ll also be joined by former Everett Herald reporter Aaron Lommers who has been covering this story for The Seattle Times. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Hermiston AD Larry Usher was Aaron’s high school basketball coach at Wapato HS).
Our high school golf segments will feature Jason Himple (Assistant Golf Pro at Everett Golf & Country Club) and Darrell Olson (Head Golf Coach at Everett High School). They will talk about last week’s Tom Dolan High School Invitational at EGCC. Plus Vic Alinen (Head Golf Coach at Kamiak High School) and his best golfer sophomore Alvin Kwak. (Alvin will join us from a National Junior Golf Tournament in Mesa, Arizona).
