Modest But Mighty: Zoey's Fried Chicken is New in Town

Zoey’s Fried Chicken Sandwiches restaurant off of West Casino is the newest contender in town for the best comfort food you can find in Everett.

Aissa, the proprietor and chef, brings thirteen years of restaurateur experience to the table and a little bit more; family. Her husband routinely acts as cook and cashier, and her two teenaged sons helped put together some of the recipes on the menu. The roots of her love of good food go all the way back to her grandmother, who still owns a restaurant in Africa where Aissa was raised.

(Pictured in the background: Aissa wondering why some random lady walked in and started snapping pics.)

The inside of the restaurant is bright and tidy, without frills or clutter. I ordered a spicy habanero fried chicken sandwich, which showed up with crinkle cut fries, lettuce, grilled onions, swiss and her own habanero sauce. It was immediately apparent that this wasn’t the kind of sandwich you took polite bites of while making equally polite chitchat – this calls for rolling up your sleeves, tucking back your ears and a commitment to simply eating. (My late brother would have called this “grubbing tough” an occasion in culinary experience where you’re all or nothing.)

So, of course, I did.

When you arrive, disregard the signs advertising pizza. They’re hanging up, but once the town started falling in love with the chicken, nobody wanted pizza anymore, so while it’s on the menu, ignore it.

You can substitute a ground beef patty for chicken if you prefer. But you should try the chicken sandwiches first.

Lastly but very importantly: wings. So many options! Original, spicy, BBQ, hot BBQ, hot or mild BBQ and mild curry, with five sauces to choose from. The sizes conveniently range from “snack” to “large.”

Zoey’s hours of operation at 10a-9p Sunday through Thursday, and 10a-10p Friday and Saturday.
