Plan to Rumble on Hwy 20

Highway 20 is undeniably one of the most scenic and beautiful drives to be found around. So beautiful that it’s hard to keep your eyes off of the snow capped vistas and on the road, unfortunately.

This Spring, contractor crews for WSDOT are preparing to install some safety upgrades along Hwy 20 in an effort to reduce collisions resulting from distracted or impaired drivers crossing the center line. Since 2014, thirteen collisions have occurred along the stretch East of Marblemount, five of which were head-on.
The forty-two mile stretch, from Marblemount to Granite Creek, will soon have centerline rumble strips milled to the surface. Per WSDOT, “When tires roll over the grooves that have been carved into the asphalt, they produce a loud rumbling noise. This alerts the driver to move back into their lane. Based on national research, these strips reduce the risk of head-on or opposite direction collisions by 21-25%.”
Work on the improvements will kick off next Monday, on April 29th, and are expected to last about a month. WSDOT warns that while Hwy 20 will never be closed in its entirety, expect lane reductions and delays from 5am-5pm, Mon-Fri.
Similarly, Island County residents can expect their very own strips, from about Lunz Road to the new Miller-Gibralter roundabout by Howard’s corner on Hwy 20. The highway there will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers and pilot cars alternating traffic at night, from 8pm to 6:30am, Sunday night through Thursday nights.
