Westgate Chapel of Edmonds Hosts Free Thanksgiving Dinner, 25th Year in a Row

Westgate Chapel on Edmonds Way is celebrating Thanksgiving this year by opening their doors to the community for a free, family style supper, complete with all of the trimmings … and an army of a several hundred rigorously trained volunteers, a professional chef, and enough turkeys to ensure nobody will be squabbling over the wishbone.

This year marks the 25th Anniversary Westgate Chapel has been putting on the free Thanksgiving supper. “Not many of our own congregants come for the meal. Most show up as volunteers. The meal is open to everybody, from all religions,” shares Janette Brooks, one of the leaders within the ministry. “We do this to uplift the people, and make them feel good. For some of them, this is the event of the year.”

It’s more than just a catered meal for those who attend. There’s entertainment for everybody to enjoy but also geared towards capturing the attention of the children, to keep them engaged; bingo, puzzles, gifts for children, a crafts room and a professional photographer volunteering for family portraits which are also framed for the families that come.

Including transportation. If you’re interested in going but are worried you can’t afford a ride, they’ve got that covered as well. Contact the chapel before the 21st of November, let them know the number in your party and they’ll have shuttle services pick you up from either the Lynnwood Transit Center or the Aurora Village center. You’ll be glad that you did when you’re wrangling all those leftovers home afterwards.

Last but not least, after dinner and the pumpkin pie has been served, you’ll be invited to enter the enormous food and clothing bank, which has been specially stocked for just the occasion. Winter jackets, mittens, jeans, the basic staples you need for a PNW encroaching winter, are up for grabs. In the food bank, find more than just the basic staples for your kitchen cupboards as well.

After twenty five years, it isn’t just the recipe for the stuffing that has been cultivated to perfection. “Everything is taken into consideration to make it a blessed and meaningful night for them,” Brooks says.

The traditional Thanksgiving supper is served family-style on November 28th at 11:00am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. The first 150 children at the 11am seating will be entered for a chance to win a Fire HD 10 Tablet with Alexa, and all three seating have drawings for $50 giftcards to Arena Sports, Lego Stores, as well as prizes for both adults and children.

This year Westgate expects to serve 1,400 meals across the three seatings, food that was provided by the congregation or community donation.

Westgate Chapel is located at 22901 Edmonds Way in Edmonds. Any questions you have can be directed to 425-775-2776, as well as reservations for transportation.
