Prep Sports Weekly, Thursday, March 28, 2019. Two players that participated in the WIBCA All State games on Saturday; Fletcher Douglas of Glacier Peak and Christian Liddell of Jackson. Plus, we are in studio with Edmonds Woodway girls wrestler Emily Hood, her mother Sharon Hood and Coach Terry Ray. Emily is a Junior and was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Edmonds Woodway is hosting a fundraising clinic this weekend in which Helen Maroulis, the first American woman to win a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, will be speaking. The EW wrestling community has also started a GoFundMe page to help with the medical costs.

Congratulations to our Russell & Hill Male February Student Athlete of the Month Vlad Gilszmer of the Kamiak Knights Swim Team. Vlad and his Knights teammates: Slava Gilszmer (his twin brother), Maxwell Fang and Alex Kirby won the State 4A Championship in the 400 Freestyle Relay at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center in late February. Vlad won an individual state title in the 500 Freestyle and brother Slava placed 2nd in the same race. The team placed 5th overall, the 8th time in 12 years that Kamiak has placed in the Top 5.Vlad is a sophomore at Kamiak High School.

Prep Sports Weekly, Thursday, March 21, 2019. We begin with Lake Stevens Softball, head coach Sarah Hirsch, along with players Rachael Eichenberger, Kaylie Hoskins and Avery Henderson. Paisley Johnson; she's leading her BYU Cougars into the NCAA Women's Tournament first round game against the Auburn. Kamiak Boys Swimming with head coach Chris Erickson and his swimmers Slava Gilszmer, Maxwell Fang, Alex Kirby and our Russell & Hill Male Athlete of the Month for February 2019 Vlad Gilszmer. Nalin Sood, he's the president of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association, and their All-State basketball games are this weekend at Curtis High School.

Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for February 2019, Chanel Siva of Stanwood High School. Chanel had the distinction of being the only wrestler from Snohomish County to win a state championship at this year’s Mat Classic (Male or Female) at The Tacoma Dome. Siva is a junior at Stanwood and wrestles at the 235 pound weight class.

Ben Olesen-Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete-January 2019

Ben Olesen of Jackson High School is the KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for January 2019. Olesen was the starting point guard and team leader for a Timberwolves team that won the Wesco 4A regular season title with a 14-0 league record and helped lead Jackson back to the Tacoma Dome State Tournament for the first time since 2014. Off the court, Olesen maintains a 3.6 GPA and gives back to his community by volunteering with Special Olympics. Ben was also the starting quarterback for the Jackson football team.

State Champion Bowler Paris Smith of Cascade High is our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for January 2019. Smith won the 4A state title last month by rolling a 1214 point six game series score during the WIAA State Championships at Narrows Plaza in University Place. Paris is a three sport athlete who participates in Swimming and Golf while also excelling in the classroom. She carries a 3.9 GPA and plans to continue bowling in college while studying Biomedical Engineering at Wichita State University.

Our Female Athlete is Paris Smith, state champion bowler from Cascade High School; along with her coach Ron Hicks. Our Male Athlete is Ben Olesen, boys basketball player at Jackson High School; along with his coach Steve Johnson. We also welcome in the 3A State 4th Place Girls Basketball team, the Snohomish Panthers with players Maya Duchesne; Kinslee Gallatin; Courtney Perry and Ella Gallatin; along with head coach Ken Roberts and assistant coach Sean Brix.
