KRKO Russell and Hill Female Student Athlete for January 2020-Maya Erling-Glacier Peak High School

The KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for January 2020 is Maya Erling, a junior standout guard for the Glacier Peak Grizzlies Girls Basketball team. Glacier Peak finished the regular season at 14-0 with a #5 RPI State Ranking. Maya led GP to a 9-0 record in the month of January including two wins over rival Lake Stevens. She scored 22 points in the first victory over Lake Stevens, including 15 points in the 2nd half when the Grizzlies pulled away after trailing early in the 3rd quarter. Then she turned around and scored 25 points in the 2nd LSHS victory including 10 points during a 15-3 Grizzlies run to start the game. Erling was a key member of last year's Glacier Peak team that took 4th place in the state 4A tournament. In the team's final game at the Tacoma Dome she led the team with 19 points and 8 rebounds and scored the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds remaining as Glacier Peak overcame a 12 point 4th quarter deficit to defeat Central Valley 58-53.

KRKO Russell and Hill Male Student Athlete for January 2020-Alex Jensen of Lakewood High School

Congratulations to the KRKO Radio Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for January 2020, Alex Jensen of the Lakewood High School Basketball team. Alex is a 4-year varsity basketball player and led his team to a 7-1 record in the month of January and a berth into the NW District Tournament. On January 10th against Mount Baker, he broke the Lakewood's all-time career scoring record; previously held by his Head Coach Anthony Wiederkehr (a graduate of Lakewood); as well as the school's all-time steals record on the same night. Jensen also placed 9th in the 800 meters, and 9th in the 4x100m relay at the 2A Washington State Track & Field Championships last year. He has also compete at the State Cross-Country Meet. In his spare time, Alex is the Lakewood High School ASB President and is participating in Running Start at Everett Community College. Although he is undecided on where he will be attending college, Alex is considering Seattle University, Gonzaga and the University of Portland. He is currently a finalist for a full ride Leadership Scholarship at Seattle U.
