NORTH SOUND, DEC. 31: As 2024 comes to an end, here is a look back at the weather this year.
It had its ups and downs, punctuated by the first significant more widespread windstorm since December 2006.
Overall, it was a pleasant summer, yet it was dry in many locations leading to drought conditions. El Nino started the year with a poor mountain snowpack and transitioned to La Nina to finish the calendar and a healthy start to mountain snow.
As we head into the New Year, here is a poetic look back at the weather experienced in 2024. Happy New Year!
The rollercoaster weather in 2024
Offered a year that was no bore
El Nino kicked off the year
Had snow fans really sneer
And lo and behold
The mountain snowpack was low
El Nino had some clout
It led to a drought
Dry conditions were much maligned
Everett finished 5 inches behind
At least nasty wildfire smoke
Stayed away, we did not choke
Everett in July reached 93
That heat took the top degree
In January, Bellingham dipped to 3 above
We all reached for a glove
But the year’s highlight
Something all can recite
The biggest storm of the year
An event that was quite clear
Was the November bomb cyclone
A storm many had to bemoan
Trees down, power out
Response crews went all-out
And as the year comes to an end
Will La Nina be a foe or friend
It usually gets wet and cool
Thus far, that’s not been the rule
As we ring in the New Year
May the weather be less severe
