You are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new Bay Wood nature trail from noon to 2 PM on Monday, July 25th. The celebration will include a hot dog lunch and your favorite ice cream treat courtesy of the Port of Everett. The family friendly event also includes your leashed furry friends with a treat for them as well. No RSVP is needed.

The Bay Wood nature trail is located at 200 West Marine View Drive in Everett. The site was formally the Bay Wood mill and in partnership with the Washington State Dept. of Ecology, was rehabilitated along with complete shoreline restoration.

Back in September 2020, the Port of Everett Commission awarded a nearly $1.54 million contract to Strider Construction to complete shoreline cleanup and habitat restoration at the former Bay Wood mill site. The project was originally slated to be completed in the spring of 2021, but the pandemic slowed progress until now.

In a Port of Everett statement in September 2020, the manager of Ecology’s Headquarters Cleanup Section said, “This is a great project for the environment and the economy. Not only does it restore habitat in the Snohomish River Estuary for salmon and shorebirds, it also creates development and jobs for the local economy.”

The waterfront site was vacant for nearly 30 years. The project involved about 300 direct jobs, and nearly 1000 indirect jobs, as well as returning the site back to the public and tax rolls.

The nature trail includes an 9-foot wide continuous path along the entire shoreline frontage, as well as a viewpoint that overlooks the new shoreline habitat and Port Gardner Day. Port Commissioner David Simpson said in 2020, “This project represents the Port’s triple bottom line, providing economic, environment and community benefit.”

You are invited to come and help celebrate the grand opening of this new nature trail and see what restoration has occurred that you can now enjoy. Join the party starting at noon on Monday, July 25th, at 200 West Marine View Drive in Everett.
