STANWOOD, MAY 20: Long-time educator Cherae Almanza is this month’s Hometown Hero.

Hometown Hero is a promotion from radio stations Everett’s Greatest Hits KRKO and Classic Country KXA. Each month the stations celebrates an individual making a difference in the community and gives them a $100 Visa gift as a small token of appreciation.

Almanza is currently the Principal of Port Susan Middle School in Stanwood. She was nominated by Chris, a member of the Stanwood community, for her dedication to her school and students as a middle school principal. Chris says that Almanza is always the first to offer help.

“I just appreciate someone thinking about me as far as what I do. Stanwood is a community that has given me a lot,” Almanza said.

Almanza went into education right after college. Since she played a lot of sports, she wanted to be a coach. For the first eight to ten years Almanza coached. She then went to teach math and then became the Assistant Principal at Stanwood Middle School.

In her free time Almanza likes to spend time with her kids, go on vacation and go on hikes.

“I care a lot about kids. I love my job,” Almanza said. “It can be challenging at times but watching the kids grow from six to eighth grade is pretty amazing.”
