EVERETT & MUKILTEO, OCT. 30: Construction to replace the 78-year-old Edgewater Creek Bridge that connects Everett and Mukilteo begins today, Oct. 30, and will last roughly 12 months.
“We encourage anyone who travels frequently through the area to spend some time planning for alternate routes and plan extra time for their commutes,” said Dan Enrico, Everett Public Works principal engineer.”
Mukilteo Boulevard between Shore Avenue and Mukilteo Lane/ LaMar Drive will be closed during the construction. About 6,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
Travelers will be detoured along SR 525, SR 526 and Glenwood Avenue/ Merrill Creek Parkway.
Although the bridge is currently safe for daily use according to the city of Everett, it was also found vulnerable to failure in the event of an earthquake. The bridge also operates under a weight restriction.
“If two of the three bridges along W Mukilteo Blvd. were lost in a major earthquake, nearby neighborhoods could be isolated,” according to the city of Everett website.
The bridge’s new features will include 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, 6.5-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge and 5-foot bike lines between the sidewalk and the road.
Work will continue after the bridge is opened to traffic, into early 2026, as the contractor paves, landscapes and installs wiring.
Edgewater Park, which is on the corner of Shore Avenue and Mukilteo Boulevard, will be renovated after the bridge is complete.
The bridge replacement is budgeted to cost $34 million, with $28 million coming from federal grant funding.
“We acknowledge this will be a challenging traffic revision for a lot of people, and we want to make sure everyone is as prepared as possible and that they aren’t taken by surprise.”
