SNOHOMISH COUNTY, OCT. 28: After incidents of hundreds of election ballots being destroyed this Morning, Oct. 28 in Vancouver Washington, the Snohomish County Auditor’s office released a statement ensuring the protection of election ballots.

“Snohomish County’s 35 official ballot drop boxes are a secure and convenient way for voters to return their ballot. Ballot drop boxes are secured with custom locks and tamper evident seals and have additional safety features inside to ensure ballots are safe and secure,” the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office said.

Election Day, Nov. 5, is next week and there have been instances of ballot interference in Washington, Oregon and Arizona.

On Monday, Oct. 28 a ballot box at a public transit center in Vancouver was set on fire after someone put an incendiary device to the box. The Clark County Elections Auditor Greg Kimsey said “hundreds” of ballots were destroyed.

A similar incident in Portland, Oregon damaged three ballots. Police have found that the two incidents were connected. Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs denounced the arson this afternoon.

“I strongly denounce any acts of terror that aim to disrupt lawful and fair elections in Washington state,” he said. “Despite this incident, I have complete confidence in our county elections official’s ability to keep Washington’s elections safe and secure for all voters.”

The Snohomish County Auditor’s Office said that there is private security monitoring all of the county’s ballot drop boxes, including overnight patrols.

Voters can also return their ballot by mail to any United States postal box postage-free. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 5 to count.
