SNOHOMISH COUNTY, MAY 14: This year approximately 76 miles of Snohomish County roads are scheduled for work through annual road resurfacing programs.

Snohomish County Public Works schedules annual maintenance and preservation of more than 1,600 miles of roads in order to maintain strong road infrastructure.

“Being proactive in maintenance and preservation of county roads saves tax dollars by reducing the chances of more expensive repairs,” Doug McCormick, Snohomish County engineer and Public Works deputy director said. “This year, we will pave approximately seven miles of road with asphalt through our Paving Program and pre-level and chip seal approximately 69 miles of roads as part of our Chip Seal Program.”

To complete the pre-level work, crews will patch potholes, improve uneven or failing pavement sections, repair subgrade and drainage issues, and trim vegetation, according to a press release from the county. Chip sealing extends the life of the road surface for an additional seven to 10 years and costs about one-third as much as an asphalt overlay.

Paving Program

This year’s paving work takes place between May and September. While there are several locations across the county where work will take place, one paving project is expected to impact the most drivers:

140th St NW/NE, from 63rd Dr NW to 3rd Ave NE – Construction is expected to start in late June and there will be single-lane closures along the four-mile corridor through the summer. Drivers should consider taking alternate routes to avoid delays.

The Paving Program focuses on preserving pavement before it fails by milling and/or repairing pavement as needed and placing a new layer of asphalt on top.

Chip Seal Program

Pre-leveling work began in April. Chip sealing work will begin in July and is expected to be completed by the end of September.

For the week following chip seal placement, a temporary speed limit of 20 miles per hour will be in effect where work was recently completed. Adherence to this temporary speed limit allows the chips to bind to the asphalt and minimizes the likelihood of loose, flying chips causing damage to a vehicle’s body or windshield.

Both chip seal and paving are weather-dependent work. All preliminary schedules are subject to change.

Paving and chip seal work is scheduled for the following unincorporated areas of Snohomish County:
