NORTH SOUND, JUNE 26: Washington residents are being warned to watch out for a new scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL).

According to the DOL, scammers are sending messages that falsely claim the recipient has an unpaid traffic ticket. The DOL emphasizes that it does not send text messages of this nature.

Red flags to look out for include international area codes, spelling or grammatical errors, and suspicious links. Officials urge anyone who receives such a message to delete it and avoid clicking on any links.

Suspicious messages can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Phishing emails should be forwarded to [email protected], while scam texts can be sent to SPAM (7726).

Residents who want to verify the status of their driver license are encouraged to visit the official Department of Licensing website, create a License Express account, or call 360-902-3900.
