Truly one of the finest all-around athletes to ever come from Snohomish County, Marysville Getchell’s Malakhi Knight could have chosen from two sports to play at the collegiate level; and although he excelled at basketball, his first love is baseball and he will continue his career at UCLA. Knight has been selected as the KRKO Radio Russell & Hill Male Athlete of the Year for 2021. Malakhi was named baseball first-team all area during the 2021 shortened Covid season; batting .366; .509 on-base percentage and a .609 slugging percentage. He was 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts and made zero errors in the outfield. Baseball America named him as a Pre-Season All-American and had him listed as the 73rd ranked player heading into the 2021 Major League Baseball draft; but he decided to pursue his career at the collegiate level, therefore he removed his name from the MLB draft. Malakhi was named the Gatorade Washington State Baseball Player of the Year in 2019, despite the entire season being canceled by the pandemic. On the basketball side, Malakhi was named 2nd Team All-Wesco as a freshman; 1st Team All-Wesco as a sophomore, junior and senior. He led the Chargers to their only state tournament berth in school history as a junior. (The state tournament was not held his senior year). Knight averaged 14.8 ppg as a 9th grader; 25.7 as a 10th grader; 26.1 as an 11th grader and 28.6 ppg as a senior; he scored 1,783 total points in his high school basketball career. Malakhi was honored at the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on September 22, 2021.
