High School Football Returns Friday Night

SHARE NOW

As the great Hank Williams Jr. is fond of saying “Are you ready for some football?”

Well speaking for the KRKO Broadcast Team, we are indeed ready for some football.

Let’s do this! The Tradition continues.

The first game of the 2022 high school football season will come to you live from Veterans Memorial Stadium in Snohomish, for the non-league, cross-district, cross-valley rivalry; the 11th battle for the Dick Armstrong Cup between Snohomish and Glacier Peak.

Tom Lafferty returns for this 38th year calling Snohomish County Sports, alongside former Jackson High School football coach Joel Vincent; Amp Harrell will be on the sidelines for the first Friday game, Steve Willits is with the Everett AquaSox in Eugene, Oregon.

Joey Hammer, head coach at Snohomish, hasn’t seen his team win a game yet in this series with Glacier Peak, and the losses have reached double digits. Shane Keck is head man at Glacier Peak, his team comes into this 2022 season ranked number 6 by Cascadia Preps in their pre-season poll. Some pundits have gone as far as predicting Glacier Peak will face Lake Stevens for the state 4A championship on the first Saturday of December. There’s a whole lot of football to be played before that happens.

Here’s what’s in the rearview mirror, hopefully, the Covid Era is over; last year dozens of games statewide, and many games in the Western Conference were moved, re-scheduled or just plain cancelled. There was a lot of conference re-alignment a year ago; much, much quieter off-season around these parts this year. There are two new coaches in the Western Conference: Tyler Tuiasosopo takes over from Mark Stewart at Mariner;  Dalton Schwetz replaces Brandon Carson at Marysville Pilchuck.

Next week’s game broadcast promises to be the game of the decade. The defending 4A runners-up Lake Stevens Vikings will host the defending 3A state champion Bellevue Wolverines.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: With the return of High School Football on KRKO on Friday night; the Everett AquaSox Northwest League Baseball broadcast at Eugene, Oregon will move to Classic Country 1520 AM & FM 101.1. The AquaSox return to KRKO on Saturday, and for the rest of the regular season.
