SEATTLE, MAY 7: For those in Snohomish County seeking a big-screen distraction, the Seattle Independent Film Festival (SIFF) is under way! SIFF is an 11 day event at venues around Seattle, with independent films from all over the world – including from the Pacific Northwest!

This year’s local films include a movie about Phoenix Jones, a self-appointed superhero who actually patrolled Seattle in the early 2010s with a band of fellow real-life heroes (or perhaps vigilantes); the sci-fi film Again Again is directed by and starring Mia Moore Marchant, who was raised in Aberdeen; Assets & Liabilities, where a Tacoma-based director has a burned-out dad character encounter a kid at a skate park who reminds him of his idealistic younger self; and a short film compilation that includes an android cowboy, the relatable struggles of folding a fitted sheet, and a marathon challenge that hits five locations of Dick’s Drive-In.

With a schedule extending through mid-May, there are plenty of movies to consider. Horror movie fans will appreciate Boorman and the Devil, a documentary about the making of infamous flop sequel Exorcist II, and a short film series of all things creepy, macabre, and grotesque. Action and kung-fu fans can get their fix with Sons of the Neon Night. Power Ballad is a rockstar dream salute with a heavy-hitting cast led by Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. And Seth Rogen stars in the last film of the festival, about a couple trying to save their marriage when a dinner party sends things out of control.

For people in the Everett and Snohomish County area, transit can make it easier to get to SIFF. Link light rail’s 1 Line from Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood runs to Westlake; one venue is near the station, while the nearby Monorail brings festival goers to the others.
