SEATTLE –Construction closures for Interstate 405 in Kirkland and between Bellevue and Renton will delay drivers this weekend, requiring detours and extra travel time, according to Washington State Department of Transportation.
I-405 will close both directions at Northeast 132nd Street in Kirkland, Friday Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. The northbound and southbound I-405 on- and off-ramps at NE 132nd Street as well as NE 132nd Street under I-405 will also close Sept. 25th at 10 p.m. and will not re-open until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Signed detours will be in place. Crews will restripe lanes at the interchange and through the roundabouts at Northeast 132nd Street.
All southbound I-405 lanes from Bellevue to Renton will close from Coal Creek Parkway Southeast in Bellevue to North 30th Street in Renton from 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28. A southbound detour will be in place with signs directing travelers along the way. Crews will excavate drainage crossings, complete full pavement replacements and a traffic switch as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project.
Travelers should be aware of road work along the detour route on Coal Creek Parkway Southeast as part of King County’s Coal Creek Sewer Upgrade Project.
The two-lane configuration on northbound I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle continues and the effects of this work will overlap as travelers adjust routes between I-405 in Kirkland and Bellevue. People should expect congestion, allow more time to travel and check conditions for their entire trip before heading out.
WSDOT says travelers should expect longer and less predictable trips. Delays may occur in new places and at new times, and conditions may change week to week as construction work moves around the region during the good weather window needed for much of this work.
To help ease congestion and delays, people can use transit and park-and-ride options, be flexible about travel times and plan ahead using real-time traffic information. Drivers should slow down, stay alert and follow posted signs when approaching and traveling through work zones. These choices can make a meaningful difference during major closures and help keep both travelers and highway crews safe.
