EVERETT, MARCH 4: Another year, another colorful storm has hit the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens.
This is the second year that the Evergreen Arboretum has partnered with Great Yarns in Everett to host a free “yarn bombing” experience where the entire garden will be adorned with knitted and crocheted installations.
Eileen Simmons, President of the Board started the event in 2024. She imagined it to be a “one-off” event to celebrate the Arboretum’s 60th anniversary.
“I didn’t know how many crocheters and knitters could be available or how it would be perceived,” Simmons said about the first event. “The artists were enthusiastic about coming back.”
After a successful first run, the board decided to bring the event back for another year. This year roughly 40 people volunteered to set up the event.
For the entire month of March, you can view intricate projects strewn about the garden. Artists have used yarn to crochet or knit work around tree trunks, branches, and structures. Most of the yarn is recycled from the year before.
This year a board member created a handful of crochet birds for the event, Simmons said. You can view them all throughout the garden.
Simmons said she was grateful for the support from the artists and the local businesses that helped put on the event. She said it is still unclear if they will do another color storm again next year.
Visitors are encouraged to share photos of the work on social media.
