EVERETT, JAN. 16: The City of Everett was awarded a grant of nearly $10 million from the state which will provide funding for the design and construction of ramp improvements on the interchange of Interstate 5 and US Highway 2.
A study done in 2024 found that as traffic volumes rise, the I-5/US 2 interchange will increasingly become a choke point that will limit growth and restrict access to areas around the interchange.
The project will help to alleviate traffic congestion by re-channelizing two ramps at the interchange by converting existing single-lane ramps into two-lane ramps.
The council voted Wednesday night to authorize the use of a Move Ahead Washington (MAWA) grant in addition to $500 thousand from a street improvements fund for the project.
Work includes the conversion of northbound to eastbound and westbound to southbound, all occurring within existing WSDOT road prisms, according to the ordinance.
Design is scheduled to begin this year, with construction anticipated in 2027.
