EVERETT, JAN. 16: The Everett City Council approved an ordinance creating a project that would improve pedestrian crossing safety at three locations in downtown Everett.
The ordinance approved Wednesday provides funding and design authorization for safety upgrades to pedestrian crossings where there have been fatalities or are adjacent to schools near high-occupancy apartments.
The project will include the design and installation of new Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), high visibility crosswalks, and ADA curb ramp retrofits at:
- Everett Ave. at Rainier Ave.
- Everett Ave. at Baker St.
- Mid-block on 79th Pl SE at Evergreen Middle School
Construction is anticipated to begin this year, according to the ordinance, with the project anticipated to be complete by the winter 2026, Kathleen Baxter, communications manager for Everett Public Works wrote in an email.
The city was awarded a Complete Streets grant of roughly $874 thousand from the Transportation Improvements Board (TIB) for the project.
A 20% local match of $219 thousand is required, but the city is providing about $376 thousand to install an additional RRFB at Evergreen Middle School, Baxter wrote.
The project is estimated to cost $1.25 million, according to the ordinance.
