Heavy rainfall could bring floods to Western Washington

NORTH SOUND, AUG. 14: Due to a frontal system moving across the area, heavy rains are likely to bring flooding to areas in Western Washington.

Our recent hot and dry weather has left the soil dense, not allowing rainfall to have enough time to soak into the soil. This could result in heavy surface runoff, the National Weather Service (NWS) said Thursday, Aug. 14 afternoon.

The NWS has released a flood alert for Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 16. An estimated 3-5 inches of rain will fall in the mountains, while one-half to one and a half inches are expected for the lowlands.

In Everett, rainfall is expected to begin around 5 p.m. Thursday and continue until 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Urban and urban-like flooding will be possible in flat areas and roadways. Remember that roads will be slick as oil has had time to build up.

NWS encourages people to monitor the latest forecasts for any changes.
