EVERETT, MARCH 17: Back by popular demand! BECAUSE SOMETIMES WE NEED TO LOOK BACK TO SEE THE WAY FORWARD. This March, Woman’s Work Productions brings a story of struggle and triumph to life. — Carried by the Current — an original play by local author Nicola Pearson, based on the true story of a group of women from Texas who weren’t willing to accept the harsher aspects of married life in 1866. So they decided to make their own living, in an era where women did not work outside the home. They sold eggs, butter and cheese but they couldn’t pay their bills on such meager amounts, so they formed a common fund. By pooling their resources, they began to get ahead. As their common fund grew, so did their enterprises: chopping and selling firewood, doing the town’s laundry. Then the harsher aspects of married life intensified. So, they moved in together, forming the first safe house for women. In 1870, in Texas. From there the women went on to become so successful in business, they amalgamated a fortune. $200,000 in 1898; seven million dollars in today’s money.

About Women’s Work Productions
Founded in 2019 by a group of actors from Skagit and Snohomish County who wanted to bring untold stories from history to the stage. Starting with Carried by the Current.
Attracted by the growing arts community in Everett, Carried by the Current was produced in March 2024 at the Snohomish PUD Theatre through donations from the Miller Charitable Trust, matched by donations from WWP’s subscribers. After the first successful run of this play, WWP’s board decided to reprise Carried by the Current again this March 20—29, at the PUD Theatre, in honor of Women’s History Month. Proceeds from ticket sales on opening night, Thursday, March 20, will go to local women’s shelters.
Other Work by Women’s Work Productions
In December 2024, Women’s Work Productions produced another play by Nicola Pearson—From Me To You—as an educational outreach. This play, set in the 1970s, follows the correspondence between two pen pals—a girl in England and a boy in Concrete, WA. With a cast of five teenagers, the play was staged at the historic Concrete Theater and drew growing audiences from near and far. WWP hopes to stage this play again in 2025, this time in Everett or Arlington.
In addition to these productions, WWP seeks scripts that highlight other untold stories from history. We believe there are many rich, colorful, human-interest stories of courage in the face of adversity, of visionaries ahead of their time, which continue to go unknown. Women’s Work Productions would love to
give voice to those stories and welcome the submissions of scripts through their website womensworkproductions.com
