FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Everett, WA | March 17, 2025. Back by popular demand! Because sometimes we need to look back to see the way forward. This March, Woman’s Work Productions brings a story of struggle and triumph to life. — Carried by the Current — an original play by local author Nicola Pearson, based on the true story of a group of women from Texas who weren’t willing to accept the harsher aspects of married life in 1866. So, they decided to make their living in an era where women did not work outside the home. They sold eggs, butter, and cheese but couldn’t pay their bills on such meager amounts, so they formed a common fund. By pooling their resources, they began to get ahead. As their common fund grew, so did their enterprises: chopping and selling firewood and doing the town’s laundry. Then, the harsher aspects of married life intensified. So, they moved in together, forming the first safe house for women. In 1870, in Texas. From there, the women became so successful in business that they amalgamated a fortune—$200,000 in 1898, seven million dollars in today’s money.
