EVERETT, FEB. 11: Everett Police continue to work to identify a man associated with multiple fraud cases in the area.
The man has been involved with the installation of a skimming device on an ATM in a central Everett grocery store, Everett Police said in a Facebook Post Thursday, Feb. 6.
Skimming devices capture debit and credit card data and record cardholders’ PIN entries. The data taken is then used to create fake payment cards to make unauthorized purchases or to steal money from victims’ accounts.
The man is suspected of fraud cases in multiple jurisdictions, and at this time police do not know the total value of money stolen, Public Information Officer Natalie Given wrote in an email.
Everett Police are gathering data regarding the investigation and working to identify the man, Given wrote.
Anyone with additional information on this matter is asked to contact the Everett Police TIP Line at (425) 257-8450 or the Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound at 1-800-222-TIPS.
To protect yourself from falling victim to skimming, Everett Police suggest the following:
• Do not use any card reader that looks unusual, such as being crooked, loose, damaged or excessively scratched.
• Use ATMs in well-lit indoor locations.
• Routinely monitor your credit card, bank, EBT or other benefits accounts. Set email or text message alerts to notify you of transactions.
• Consider using tap to pay via a digital wallet, particularly at gas pumps
