NORTH SOUND, DEC. 12: With the return of La Niña, this weather pattern often results in cooler and wetter than average conditions. During the La Niña winters of 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23, each had snow in the lowlands of the North Sound and healthy mountain snowpacks. Here are some winter driving recommendations to be better prepared.
- The big item for winter weather driving is good tires. Winter season tires with good tread is ideal. Studded tires are not recommended given the wear and tear on road surfaces plus the latest technology tires perform beyond what studded tires can do.
- In the mountains, it is state law to at least carry chains and use them as required.
- Ensure all your lights are in good working order – headlamps, turn signals, brake lights and more.
- Windshield wipers are another critical item to help ensure good visibility. If there are streaks on your windshield, it is time for new wipers.
- Always have an ice scraper in your vehicle and use it to clear all windows before hitting the road, not just the windshield.
- Have on board – a snow shovel, an abrasive material like sand or cat litter, jumper cables, a working flashlight with spare batteries, first aid kit, blankets, water, non-perishable snacks, head coverings, and more.
- Always try to have at least a half of a tank of fuel.
- For EVs, be fully charged before starting your drive.
- Ensure your battery is ready for colder weather.
- If it snows, clear your vehicle of all snow before driving.
- If the roads are snow or ice covered, consider not driving until the roads have been cleared and treated.
If you have winter season tires stowed away, now is a good time to visit your tire shop and have them swapped with your current tires before the threat of snow arrives and tire store lines become long waits.
With these tips, you will be better prepared for whatever this winter season offers. Enjoy the holiday season and safer driving on the roads this winter!
