EVERETT — To increase security around election ballot drop boxes in advance of the Nov. 3 general election, Snohomish County will accept Gov. Bob Ferguson’s offer of National Guard soldiers to prevent damage or vandalism to ballots and the metal boxes.

“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, Snohomish County has accepted the Governor’s offer. These resources will add an extra layer of support to our existing security and operational plans to ensure a safe and secure election,” Sierra Cornelius, Communications Manager for Auditor Garth Fell, tells the EverettPost.com.

Cornelious says, “National Guard personnel will report to the Snohomish County Auditor. They will be unarmed and in plainclothes and will assist in a limited capacity by keeping an eye on ballot drop boxes during the evening and overnight hours. Guard members will not empty boxes, handle ballots, interact with voters, or act in an enforcement capacity. If they see anything concerning, they will follow county-established procedures and call 911 so local law enforcement can respond.”
