SNOHOMISH, MAY 12: Snohomish County Fire District 4 (Snohomish Fire) was dispatched early Tuesday morning, May 12, as a single unit response to an unknown fire located at 9900 Blk Airport Way. After initially being upgraded to a brush fire, crews upgraded the level to commercial once heavy smoke was visible and it was determined that the railroad trestle was on fire. According to a press release distributed by Snohomish Fire Executive Specialist, Shauna Harth, access to the site was difficult as this is a non-roaded area. Approximately 300 feet of abandoned railroad tracks were damaged by the fire.
Four water tenders were used to put out the fire with firefighters using an aerial attack via a ladder truck and handlines. BNSF Railway was notified to shut down the active railroad tracks that run beneath the burning tressel. Airport Way was closed for approximately 1.5 hours as hose lines were stretched across. The railway and Airport Way were re-opened by 7:30 a.m. with approximately 50 firefighters having assisted in this response. One civilian patient was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and Fire District 4 crews remain on scene for mop-up and to monitor hot spots.
