NORTH SOUND, APRIL 13: Good news regarding the massive slide that closed northbound Interstate-5 (I-5) just south of Bellingham on March 18th.
The Washington State Dept. of Transportation has announced the northbound lanes are planned to reopen around 5 AM on Thursday, April 16th. In the meantime, detours on old 99 Samish Way, SR 11 Chuckanut Drive, and for long-haul trucks, SR 9 remain in place.
Response teams have been working since the March 18th slide that rolled debris and boulders as large as buses onto the northbound lanes of the freeway. This work will stabilize the slide slope to help avoid future slides. Final inspection of the slide area is planned for the first half of this week.
So after nearly a month, traffic is set to once again move along the northbound lanes of I-5 from the North Lake Samish Rd exit to the Fairhaven exit in south Bellingham Thursday, April 16th.
