BELLEVUE — All lanes of northbound I-405 will close this weekend for construction between SE 8th Street and NE 4th Street, expected to cause significant delays for travelers. The northbound I-405 full closure starts Fri. Oct. 16 at 11 p.m. Friday and will not re-open until 4 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19.

Washington State Department of Transportation says signed detour routes will be in place. Crews will pave, install concrete panels and set an overhead sign structure during the closure as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project.

People traveling northbound throughout the Puget Sound region, WSDOT says, should expect heavier traffic and longer travel times through Bellevue and Seattle, as drivers shift their routes during the closure. Northbound I-5 through Seattle is limited to two lanes over the Ship Canal bridge because of on-going “Revive I-5” repairs, but the I-5 Express Lanes are permanently in the northbound direction during this phase of work on the northbound mainline.

Eastbound I-90 will be reduced to two lanes at the Highway 18 interchange starting at 6 a.m. Sat. Oct. 17 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18.  The eastbound I-90 lane reductions in Snoqualmie will happen in the left lanes. Two left lanes of eastbound I-90 will be closed from east of State Route 18/Snoqualmie Parkway to Southeast North Bend Way (milepost 26-27). This lane closure will allow WSDOT bridge maintenance crews to safely make bridge deck repairs.

To help ease congestion and delays, WSDOT urges people to be flexible about travel times and plan ahead using real-time traffic information, saying these choices can make a meaningful difference during major closures and help keep both travelers and highway crews safe.

Farther south, starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, Washington State Department of Transportation bridge crews will close the two right westbound lanes across the 76-year-old Narrows Bridge to make temporary repairs to an expansion joint. The Jackson Avenue on-ramp to westbound SR 16 will also close. The around-the-clock closures will remain in place until Sunday, Nov. 8.

WSDOT recognizes that during the work, the afternoon commute on westbound SR 16 will be challenging and appreciates travelers’ patience as crews make repairs. Afternoon commuters are advised to have a full tank of gas or fully charged vehicle before traveling from Tacoma to Gig Harbor.

More about the repair
The lane closures create a work zone for crews to make repairs to an expansion joint on the bridge. During the closure crews will remove a deteriorating portion of an expansion joint and replace it with a new piece. Afterward crews will pour concrete around the newly placed structure. Daylight is needed for crews working above and below the bridge deck.

Since 2024 there have been 11 emergency repairs to expansion joints on the westbound bridge. WSDOT says this construction work is the latest emergency repair. WSDOT has a project in design that will refurbish the bridge’s expansion joints. WSDOT anticipates construction will occur in 2027.

Whenever you’re traveling through construction work zones WSDOT reminds drivers, slow down – drive the posted speeds for worker and traveler safety, workers are out there helping to keep people safe and improve the roadways, pay attention – both to workers directing travelers and surrounding traffic, expect delays, leave early or take alternate routes if possible; no meeting or appointment is worth risking someone’s life.

NOTE: an earlier version of this story incorrectly listed the I-90 lane closures as Sat. Nov. 17, but its scheduled for Sat. Oct. 17, 2026.
