The KRKO Russell & Hill 2024 Male Student Athlete of the Year is multi-sport athlete and multi-sport state champion David Brown of Lake Stevens High School. “Boogy” was a wide receiver and defensive back for the back-to-back 4A state champion Vikings football team and he won a state championship in the 110-meter hurdles for the Vikings track team. KRKO Russell & Hill 2024 Female Student Athlete of the Year-Yanina Sherwood-Jackson High School

The KRKO Russell & Hill 2024 Female Student Athlete of the Year is Jackson High School, multi-sport athlete Yanina Sherwood. A nationally ranked force in the pitching circle, Yanina pitched every inning during Jackson’s 2023 run to the State 4A Softball Championship (a 5-1 victory over Glacier Peak in the title game). In 2024 the Timberwolves did it again, with Sherwood pitching 167 innings, recording 273 strikeouts, while walking just 23 batters and compiling a microscopic 0.54 ERA. Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for May 2024; from the Jackson High School Girls Golf team, freshman, Chanyoung Park. Park won the 2024 Class 4A Girls Golf Singles State Championship at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane. She held a single shot lead when she arrived at the 495 yard, par 5, 18th hole. Our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for May 2024 is senior Pierce Hess of the Grace Academy Track & Field team. Hess won the Class 1B Boys 100 meter and 200 meter dashes at the 2024 State Track Meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima. He ran the 100 in a time of 11.68 seconds; and the 200 in 22.88 seconds. Pierce was a multi-sport athlete during his high school career at Grace Academy in Marysville; competing in soccer, basketball and track. He maintained a 3.8 grade point average over his four years. UPDATE: KRKO Russell and Hill Male Athlete of the Year 2020: Matthew King is heading to Paris

UPDATE TWO: Matthew King won a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Paris over the past weekend. He swam one leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay in the prelims. Although he didn't swim in the final, all members of the teams (prelims and finals) are awarded gold. UPDATE: Matthew King, our KRKO Russell and Hill Male Athlete of the Year for 2020 has been named to the USA Swim Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for April 2024 is senior Rachel Sysum of the Jackson High School Softball team. Rachel and her teammates won their second consecutive State 4A Softball Championship at the Columbia Playfield Softball Complex in Richland. In the two-day tournament, Jackson outscored their opponents 33-3. Sysum contributed with her bat, her glove and her arm all season for the Timberwolves in their run to a 25-2 record and the state title. Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for April 2024; from the Archbishop Murphy High School Boys Tennis team, senior, Cole Balen. Cole won the 2024 Class 2A Boys Tennis Singles State Championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Along the way, he bested players from North Kitsap and Fort Vancouver in the opening rounds, before defeating Rafael Polito of Sammamish 6-1 (retired) in the semi-finals and finally winning the title over Sequim’s Garrett Little, 7-5, 6-1.
