KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month-May 2024-Pierce Hess-Grace Academy Track & Field

Our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for May 2024 is senior Pierce Hess of the Grace Academy Track & Field team. Hess won the Class 1B Boys 100 meter and 200 meter dashes at the 2024 State Track Meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima. He ran the 100 in a time of 11.68 seconds; and the 200 in 22.88 seconds. Pierce was a multi-sport athlete during his high school career at Grace Academy in Marysville; competing in soccer, basketball and track. He maintained a 3.8 grade point average over his four years. UPDATE: KRKO Russell and Hill Male Athlete of the Year 2020: Matthew King is heading to Paris

UPDATE TWO: Matthew King won a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Paris over the past weekend. He swam one leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay in the prelims. Although he didn't swim in the final, all members of the teams (prelims and finals) are awarded gold. UPDATE: Matthew King, our KRKO Russell and Hill Male Athlete of the Year for 2020 has been named to the USA Swim Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month-April 2024-Rachel Sysum-Jackson High School Softball

Our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for April 2024 is senior Rachel Sysum of the Jackson High School Softball team. Rachel and her teammates won their second consecutive State 4A Softball Championship at the Columbia Playfield Softball Complex in Richland. In the two-day tournament, Jackson outscored their opponents 33-3. Sysum contributed with her bat, her glove and her arm all season for the Timberwolves in their run to a 25-2 record and the state title. Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for April 2024; from the Archbishop Murphy High School Boys Tennis team, senior, Cole Balen. Cole won the 2024 Class 2A Boys Tennis Singles State Championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Along the way, he bested players from North Kitsap and Fort Vancouver in the opening rounds, before defeating Rafael Polito of Sammamish 6-1 (retired) in the semi-finals and finally winning the title over Sequim’s Garrett Little, 7-5, 6-1. Our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for March 2024 is senior Ethan Ralston of the Lakewood High School Boys Track & Field team. Ethan won the 2A boys championship in the shot put with a throw of 59-0; nearly two feet better than his opponent from Tumwater who threw 56-11 1/4. Coming into the 2A/3A/4A State Track Meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium his previous personal best was 57-4 1/4. Ethan has committed to compete in Track & Field at Central Washington University next year. Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for March 2024; from the Marysville Pilchuck High School Girls Track & Field Team, junior, Maya Velasquez. Maya brought home the Class 3A State High Jump title, at the State Track Meet at Mount Tahoma High School. She is the first female state track championship winner in Marysville Pilchuck’s 54-year history. Velasquez cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to secure the first-place medal in the girls high jump. Our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Student Athlete of the Month for February 2024 is senior Karianne Baldwin of the Glacier Peak Grizzlies Girls Wrestling team. Karianne claimed her third consecutive state championship at the Washington State Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament held at the Tacoma Dome. With her third career title, Baldwin ties Marysville-Pilchuck’s Alivia White with three state championships from Snohomish County. Karianne defeated Chief Sealth senior Sophia Anderson 5-2 in the 125-pound bracket. She is also a two-time academic state champion with a 4.0 GPA. Baldwin went a perfect 50-0 in her senior year. Congratulations to our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Student Athlete of the Month for February 2024; from the Lake Stevens High School Swim & Dive team, junior, Camden Blevins-Mohr. Camden won a pair of 4A state swimming individual championships and anchored a Viking relay team to another state title at the 2024 Washington State Swim & Dive Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
